Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a type of peripheral neuropathy that results from compression of the nerve (median nerve) that runs through the wrist to the hand. This nerve runs under a ligament (transvere carpal ligament) that binds some of the small wrist bones (carpal bones) together.

The median nerve allows transfer of sensory information from part of the hand while also transmitting motor control impulses to drive muscles in part of the forearm and hand.

There is often no identifiable case for this syndrome. Predisposing conditions include arthritis of the wrist bones, fracture of the wrist and hormone disorders such as diabetes.

Symptoms

Patients usually experience pain or pins and needles (paraesthesia) along the thumb, index finger and middle finger. This can be accompanied with numbness and weakness in specific muscle groups ultimately affecting normal functions of the hand. Symptoms are usually worse at night and when the wrist is in certain positions.

How is it diagnosed?

A diagnosis is usually made based on your clinical examination and symptoms. A test called a Nerve Conduction Study may be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

Non-operative treatment involves avoiding activities which cause irritation to the nerve and hand physiotherapy. Surgery is considered when:

  • You have tried non-operative therapy and are still experiencing symptoms.
  • Patients whose Nerve Conduction Study shows moderate-severe compression to the nerve.

In the majority of cases, surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome improves symptoms. Mr Gomes performs a surgical procedure called Carpel Tunnel Decompression under local or general anaesthetic.
